World No 1 and two time defending champion Novak Djokovic showed no signs of fatigue and tiredness in his quarter final match against World Number 6 Czech Tomas Berdych after a mammoth four round match against Stanislas Wawrinka. The Serb dispatched the Czech 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to reach third straight AO semi final. The win gave Djokovic 12-1 head to head record over Berdych.
Djokovic started strongly and won the opening set 6-1. However, Berdych broke Novak in the first game of the second set. He held serve and at 5-4, went on to serve for set by saving four break back points to win the second set and square the match. Djokovic again came back strongly in the third set to lead 4-0 and eventually winning 6-1. He maintained the same rhythm in the fourth set taking an early break and eventually served for the match.
In the semi final, Djokovic will play World Number 5 Spain's David Ferrer who came from two sets to love down to eventually prevail against compatriot Nicolas Almagro 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-2. Almagro started brilliantly and won first two sets. He had a break in the third set and had a chance to serve for the match at 5-4. However, Ferrer refused to give up and broke back Almagro. He broke Almagro again to take the third set. Almagro got two more chances in the fourth set to serve for the match but failed again. The fate of the set had to be decided by a tie break which Ferrer won. The match was leveled at 2 sets all. It was a one way affair in the fifth set as Ferrer broke Almagro twice to win the match.
Djokovic holds a 9-5 career lead over Ferrer and is bidding to become the first man in the Open Era to win three consecutive Australian Open titles. On the women's side, 2011 Roland Garos champion Li Na of China reached her second Australian Open semi final by defeating Poland's Radwanska 7-5, 6-3. In the semi final, she will play in form World Number 2 Maria Sharapova who defeated compatriot Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-2. Sharpova has set a record at the grand slam by losing minimum number of games on her way to semi final, breaking previous record held by Monica Seles who conceded 12 games on her way to the 1991 semi-finals.
